First Person Shooter games are part of the wider genre of action games. In these games, you see the 3D environment as if you're really in the middle of it all, through the eyes of the game's hero. Often you'll see your character's hands and/or weapons just in front of you, and as you make your way through a sandbox or maze environment full of enemies, monsters, and other surprises you'll frequently have cause to use those guns, knives, or fists to protect yourself. The earliest FPS games started appearing in the mid-1970s, with games like Maze War and Spasim. Although you can already recognize the maze-elements and early 3D graphics of those first generation FPS game, the First Person Shooter game took on it's modern format in the 1990s, with popular 3D shooter games like Wolfenstein 3D and Doom. Increasingly, multiplayer features have also been incorporated into First Person Shooter games, allowing players to challenge other players to duels, or collaborate in combat missions.
